History

Birders’ Exchange was founded in 1990 by the Manomet Center for Conservation Science (MCCS). In 1996, MCCS partnered with the American Birding Association to run the program, and a productive partnership blossomed, building on the extensive birder network of ABA and the conservation links with Latin America at MCCS. Since late February 2002, the American Birding Association has run the program in its entirety. The ABA has made clear that it will continue to develop and expand the program, based on the vision set forth by the MCCS. Sadly, the program’s founder Betty Petersen passed away in 2013.  This loss was a tragic occurrence for the program and for the American Birding Association. Betty was a friend as well as a colleague. We miss her energy and her smile.  The ABA has created an award to honor her memory.

The ABA Betty Petersen Award for Conservation and Community

If you know someone who deserves this award please submit their name and accomplishments to our award committee.

The program went through a bit of a blip as we moved to ABA’s new headquarters and the program was reorganized and recovered from the loss of our dear Betty.  We are now back in full swing.  We have binoculars and tripods packed and ready to go out the door as we speak.

Since its inception Birders’ Exchange has helped several hundreds of conservation and education organizations and individuals in 30 countries and territories.

This program would be nothing without you. Our members and friends of the program have donated so many nice things as well as monetary donations that keep the program making a difference in the world of bird conservation and ecotourism.  The program was a monumental idea and we plan to keep Betty’s memory alive through its work for a long, long time.
